The Disappearance of Etan Patz
lets talk about the disappearance and death of Etan Patz (AY'-tahn payts) 33 years ago.and now finally The Etan Patz case may be coming to a close. Police arrested Pedro Hernandez this morning after the New Jersey man implicated himself in Patz’ murder.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a statement.

“An individual now in custody has made statements to NYPD detectives implicating himself in the disappearance and death of Etan Patz 33 years ago.”

Patz went missing in SoHO on May 25th, 1979, when he was 6-years-old. He was one of the first faces placed on the “missing child” milk cartons. No one was ever charged after Patz initial disappearance.

The Patz case was reopened last month as police tore up cement basement in hopes of finding Patz’ skeletal remains. The search didn’t yield any conclusive results.

The Associated Press reports that although Hernandez has confessed police are still questioning him to make sure his story checks out. The Atlantic casts a little doubt on the confession, saying that the timing of the confession is a little too convenient (the confession comes within days of the anniversary of Patz’ disappearance) and sources say that police don’t have evidence to back up Hernandez’ story.

Hernandez has, however, come up in previous investigations.

The main suspect in the Etan Patz case has been Jose Ramos, a convicted child molester, who was dating Patz’ babysitter at the time of his disappearance. The most recent investigation focused on a 75-year-old Brooklyn handyman. The unnamed suspect had his workshop in a basement close to where Patz was last seen. Police tore up the basement in April but didn’t find anything.
